Antique Furnishings

Now that you know how you want to redecorate your home, it may be a bit of a challenge to find antique furnishings that will accent your existing pieces well. If you're having trouble finding the stores or resources that will have what you want, these suggestions may help.

One of the first things you'll want to do when you're searching for antique furnishings is to figure out which types of pieces you want specifically. 'Vintage' furniture can be very expensive, and if you go to a tradeshow or showroom without a clear idea of what you're looking for, you could end up spending a whole lot more than you intended. So, take a good look at the space you are decorating--do you want to new dresser for your bedroom? Are you looking for a classic-style desk for the home office? Do you want an antique dining room table? These questions will also help you to decide where you shop, and figuring out your price point ahead of time may help you to save money for some additional accessories.

You may also want to search through your own garage for some antique furnishings that you can use for your decorating project. Do you have some old cast iron pots that were given to you by your grandmother that you never use? Do you still have the dresser that was in your room when you were a baby? Even if you don't have these items in your home, chances are that a family members has them or knows where they are, and antique furnishings are much more appealing when they have personal significance. Also, if you want to give the home furnishing items more of an antique feel, you can always distress the wood or paint the wood a different color in order to make it look more antiquated. For instance, if you have a nightstand made of oak, and you want to give it a different look, you can paint it white and distress the wood for a look that is more reminiscent of furniture in the early 1900s.

Antique furnishings can also be found on the 'antique row' section of your city.
